Tres Chic Saturday

This blog quiz I came across gave me the idea for today’s post: What City Do You Belong In?

According to the quiz I belong in –Paris!

You Belong in Paris

Stylish and expressive, you were meant for Paris.

The art, the fashion, the wine!

Whether you’re enjoying the cafe life or a beautiful park…

You’ll love living in the most chic place on earth.

What City Do You Belong In?

Since I am beyond excited about planning my fall France trip (which you will all get sick of hearing about, I’m sure!) this seemed appropriate. I decided to have a Paris-y, fashion-y night, and started by ordering some perfume samples from The Perfumed Court (I’ve been reading my way through Perfumes: The Guide and found several scents I need to test), and tried some craft-y stuff.

Usually crafts and I don’t mix well. Things get glued or sewn together that are not meant to, messes get made. But I’ve been working on accessories for my costume for the RWA Beau Monde soiree this summer. I had a shoe dilemma–I have the perfect style of shoe, left over from a bridesmaid outfit several years ago, but it wasn’t the right color. Yet they’re too dark to re-dye. Megan advised me to put beads on it, so I borrowed my mother’s glue gun (Warning!! Hot glue ahead!) and took a trip to Hobby Lobby to find some beads. This is the result–what do you think? And does anyone know where I can get some big, plummy ostrich feathers?

And it was on this day in 1774 that Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette ascended the throne of France! A candle was kept in the window of Louis’s grandfather, Louis XV, who was dying of smallpox, to signal his demise. It was extinguished at 3 in the afternoon, and immediately “a terrible noise, exactly like thunder” (from Madame Campan’s memoirs) as the courtiers ran toward the Dauphine’s apartments to make their obeisances. The young couple (still practically teenagers) fell on their knees and prayed together, “Dear God, guide us and protect us. We are too young to reign.”

But no one lingered at Versailles, due to the threat of contagion. By four o’clock the royal family was on their way to Choisy, leaving servants to clean up after the dead king, and a group of English tourists free to wander the chateau (they found the state apartments “dirty and neglected,” but liked the rooms of the Mesdames Tantes with their books and musical instruments). Louis XV was hastily sealed up in his coffin and driven to St. Denis in Paris. Lady Mary Coke observed that the people along the road, rather than showing respect and concern, “whooped and hallooed as if they had been at a horse-race instead of a funeral procession.” It was a new day in France.

What city do you belong in? Take then quiz and let us know!

Diane will be stepping in next Saturday–my baby brother is getting married that day, and I’ll be buried in Family Things! But I’ll be back the next Saturday with a full wedding report. Be sure and join us on Monday the 19th, when my Grand Central Publishing editor Alex Logan will be here to answer your questions and talk about the GCP romance program. See you then!

Hi Amanda,

I too belong in Paris which is great since this upcoming week is Napoleon Week on Scandalous Women. I haven’t been to Paris in 10 years and I may have to plan a weekend there the next time I’m in London.

I belong in Rome, I think because I kept saying how much I liked good food and good wine!

It told me I belong in Paris, but I know I don’t. The London I belong in is just not reflected in the quiz, I suspect.

I would love to see Paris, but I yearn to go back to London!

What a treat next week. Two days of Diane-on-a-deadline.

Like minds…I was typing up my Monday blog this morning, and it’s on fashion trends. 🙂

Fabulous remake of the shoes. Are going to do the entire shoe like that, or just the heel?

I’m London.
A little old fashioned, and a little modern.
A little traditional, and a little bit punk rock.
A unique soul like you needs a city that offers everything.
No wonder you and London will get along so well.

Aha! Love the Perfume Central site. You’re so bad for my wallet. BTW, what were those other perfume blogs you used to frequent? I remember you blogged about it a while back, but I couldn’t find it. Thx.

Just the heel, though I put a larger stone on the toe which didn’t show up in the pic!

Some good perfume blogs are Perfume Smellin’ Things, Now Smell This, and Peppermint Patty’s Perfume Posse. And I highly recommend the “Perfumes” book, it is so much fun! But some of their ratings I don’t agree with (5 stars for Tommy Girl??? Really???)

Ammanda, I’m going to check out those perfume blogs.

Which perfume samples did you end up ordering?

You’ve got to try Queen Elizabeth I‘s scent.

“Which perfume samples did you end up ordering?”

I ordered Chanel’s 31 rue Cambon (been wanting to try it for a while, it’s just so expensive!), Aimez Moi, Drole de Rose, Apres L’ondee, and Prada’s Infusion d’Iris. Must try that Queen Bess perfume, it sounds incredibly interesting!

Hmmm, I may have to blog about perfumes again soon, after I try all these…

I was torn between a number of the choices, especially the one about entertainment. The first time I ran the quiz it said I belonged in Paris but I ran it again with my alternate answers and it said London. I think I belong in London but would love to visit Paris frequently. 🙂

Love those shoes!

May I just say that a better part of my afternoon was given over to the perfume blogs. Perfume Posse, in particular is highly addictive.

These are the ones I have my eye on: Lychee by Fresh Sugar, The One by Dolce Gabbana, Isabela Capeto, Fragonard’s Billet Doux, and Laura Mercier’s Neroli.

I belong in Rome. I have a feeling it came out that way for much the same reason as Susan! Good food and architecture for me. I’ve been to Rome and I absolutely loved it. However, London is my number one travel choice. There are days London is my number one place to live choice too! I would NEVER run out of things to do in London.

Ammanda, I belong in Paris according to the quiz. Which is completely wrong as I didn’t take to Paris at all when I was there. Love London and Rome! But nonetheless, I think your trip sounds fab. Tell us about it all you like! 😉

At least, by belonging in Paris, I’ll have some good company, by the look of the comments preceding mine!

“May I just say that a better part of my afternoon was given over to the perfume blogs”

LOL! That’s what I’m here for–to involve everyone else in my time wastage. 🙂

I’m with you, Anna — it said Paris is my city, but (though I think it’s lovely) it really isn’t. 🙂

I need other choices on the test! Like:

A fashionable woman wears: tie dye

I need a city with: lots of bookstores!!! 🙂

Hmm. I did the quiz, though I got the vague impression that the expected audience was…how shall I put this?…not male. 🙂 On many of the questions my response was “Why do you ask me if I like A and B or C and D, when you ought to be asking me if I like A and C or B and D?”

However, the answer at the end was London. Which probably is my favorite city, and of which I have many fond memories. So, go figure.
