Devil’s Work

Happy Saturday!

Today my son returns from his long time away at Family Camp (in other words, my relatives took him for a few weeks while he went to sailing school), and I cannot wait to enfold him in hugs. Thankfully, he’s not too old yet to mind being smooshed by his mom. I’m assuming that will happen sometime, but for right now I can hug him with impunity.

In writing news, I’m working on the revision for my Regency-set historical, and realizing a few sad truths about my heroine. Namely, I have to give her some more good reasons to want to leave this incredibly handsome, wealthy guy she’s just married. Good enough reasons, I hope, not to make a reader’s brow furrow.

So trying to figure out why an impoverished vicar’s daughter would want to turn her back on all that is taking up about 40% of my brain. The Olympics have 30%, and the remaining 30% is divided between enough coffee, maxi dresses, my current read, how messy my house is, and beer.

What’s taking up space in your brain?

Megan

Megan, wish you the best in working out the heroine’s motivations. I’m sure you’ll get there.

I’m currently doing the same regarding a villain. I struggled with his motivations before and decided to just move on with the story and trust that he would sort himself out eventually.

Then I started watching the recent BBC Sherlock series (which I like a lot) which in turn led me to start reading the original stories. I think that must have put me in the right mindset, because I’m getting new insights into this villain. 🙂

My brain is full of how to make a lime green wedding cake look classy and beautiful next weekend. (What ever happened to white wedding cakes??) Next, why does my 10 year old basset hound who just had a bath two days ago smell like funky tennis shoes? Again? How can I get then more pages written on my WIP before my check-in with my writing buddy in Colorado tomorrow night? And will the paperwork and rigamarole necessary to get my niece into college end before classes begin on August 28th? SIGH!

We had a flash flood in the area last Sunday night. The damage was very localized but severe. It is amazing what 7 inches of rain in one hour can do. We weren’t affected, but I am a Red Cross Disaster Volunteer and have spent several days out working what needs to be done. In between, I am trying to pull a church Fall Festival together together. It is like wrestling jello. I hope it will all come together in the end.
As a result, I’ve not gotten much done around the house. It is a wreck, my flower beds need to be weeded, and I probably have bills I need to pay. As of now, I don’t have anything on the schedule the next couple of days. Hopefully I can get the house cleaned, laundry done, and make my husband a real meal. I might even find time to read a bit more of the book I started a little over a week ago. Sleep would be nice, too.
