I moved last week.
And now I am sneezing my head off (it’s raining, it’s dusty, and my nose loves to torment me. Go figure).
I haven’t read a book–nor even started one–in over a week.
I did find my tea, though, so life isn’t all bleak. And even though there are boxes and garbage bags and everything, I can smile (occasionally) because I spy my bookcase filled with books yet to be read–delicious treats I haven’t tasted yet.
What book should I plunge into once I have time? What else would you suggest for when I finally get to relax? What do you do when you are sneezing, stressed and it’s raining like a moose outside?
And won’t you all be glad when I can write again, and not post about the mundanity of my life?
Megan, hope things settle down SOON. Moving is so hard, having to figure out where everything goes and not knowing where anything is in the meantime.
Tea and a book or video are my Rx. Loretta Chase is one of my go to authors for when I’m tired and stressed. Another favorite thing is videos–if you pick a period one you can always call it research. 🙂
Hang in there!
I just read a novel called “Gods Behaving Badly” (sorry, the book is at home and I can’t remember the author!!). Not a romance, though there is a very sweet romance in it–it’s about the Greek gods, who have lost their powers and are living in a grotty old house in London. They have various weird day jobs (Artemis walks dogs, Aphrodite is a phone-sex operator, etc), and a pair of hapless humans get into the middle of one of their big quarrels. It’s very funny, and their house is so gross it will make you doubly grateful for your lovely new digs. 🙂
These are the times when I recommend re-reading old favorites! You don’t have to worry about how they’ll end or spend mental energy on keeping the plot straight in your mind, so you can just relax and visit your favorite characters.
I’ve had a bit of a rough week myself, having been more or less sick since Saturday, and I’ve been re-reading the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries that feature Harriet Vane (or at least skimming them for all the wonderful character bits).
We’re glad to keep you company in your misery, Megan! And the worst of it is over–you’re in! It’s a great feeling to move into a new house–all that potential!
Good luck getting back to normal–enjoy it if you can!
Amanda, sounds like a good book.
Reminds me a bit (just a scene) of an old favorite, Summon the Keeper by Tanya Huff.
Hmmm…you could just close your eyes and grab a book.
And I hope the sneezing stops soon. Try some Zyrtec. Works for me.
I like Amanda’s suggestion, Megan. It sounds hilarious. And Susan’s, rereading old favorites.
What popped into my mind was All Creatures Great and Small and its sequels. I always loved to go to that “other world” and hang out with the people and animals.
I so happy to hear you’ve found your tea. I go to my favorite authors when I’m feeling particularly, well, yucky! Nothing soothes like Loretta Chase, Jo Beverley, Eloisa James and all the Riskies. Nothing beats going to the UBS and finding all the missing backlists I don’t have!
Feel better. Hopefully to moose will be leaving us soon.
Some of my old favorites is the Ivoran trilogy by Doris Egan. Sorry it’s not romance but science fiction/fantasy. Or I read Lindsey Davis’s Didius Falco. His life is always worse than anyone else’s yet he always comes out ahead.
Also, Megan, you’re not really mundane. If you were, I wouldn’t have your blog bookmarked.
Hope things calm down soon, Megan! Tea is good, anyway. (Todd brought lots of tea back from London yesterday. Yay!)
When I’m stressed I like to re-read books too! Cool.
My choices include my faves by Georgette Heyer, Joan Smith, Jennifer Crusie, Diana Wynne Jones, E Nesbit, and Larry Niven.

Here’s to settling into your new house, and to the dust settling, too!
Tea is good for everything.
Megan, enjoy your house. Try and get your chilling out area set up and let the boxes full of old underwear and extension cords fester. (I kept coming across these when we moved and I still come across one occasionally. It’s a man thing.)
Amanda, I just read that book too! It’s by Marie Phillips. Very enjoyable. I second Lord Peter Wimsey, All Creatures Great and Small, and the nice cups of tea.
You are too tired to read just now. When you have the time curl up and with a blanket and tea and watch North and South. It will feel like home sweet home in no time.
Hang in there.
When eyes don’t hurt then read.
Thanks, everyone, for the nice wishes. I plan on cracking open the latest Anne Stuart when I can finally relax. And an especial thanks to sandyl, who likes the mundanity of my life just fine.
And I had a whole bunch of tea today. Yay!
Hope you feel better soon, Megan! I hate moving worse than almost anything that doesn’t involve surgery.
We cracked open the Keemun this morning to celebrate my return.

Well, when I’m sneezing like my usual nutty self, I can’t always read (or at least put my glasses on while reading since the problem is the nose and alas, that’s where one places glasses to see), so instead of a book, I’d recommend plenty of doses of DWS — or, Darcy wet shirt medicine. 🙂
As for books however. . . 😉 well, one book that I always go back to if I see myself in some sort of reading slump where I’m just not liking everything is JQ’s How to Marry a Marquis. Sure, I love the Brigertons, but I loooove that one more! 🙂

Megan, honey, hang in there. I have always hated moving – the actual process. I love to travel and I loved growing up an Air Force brat, but as I have gotten older I prefer to stay in one place. The packing and unpacking and the being unsettled gets on my nerves! I moved into this house over two years ago and I am STILL finding things and unpacking boxes.
Right now I am reading Bewitched by Sandra Schwab, a Regency set story about a witch who loses her powers when she accidentally turns her uncle’s country house BLUE – the whole house. Cute read so far. Next up – Sherry Thomas’s Private Arrangements. Actually I spend most of my time these days reading my own manuscript. Revisions. SIGH!
Love your “comfort” reads O Divine One. As you can probably guess, the Herriot books are some of my favorites.
I love, love, love the movie that picture on your blog’s from.
For some jollies read Fondling Your Muse by John Warner, which provides hilarious writing and publishing advice.
Diane: I have all of James Herriot’s books. Isn’t he marvelous?
Lois: Had a big laugh over your “DWS — or, Darcy wet shirt medicine.”
I moved into this house over two years ago and I am STILL finding things and unpacking boxes.
Yes, isn’t that frustrating, Doglady? We’ve been here something like four years, and we have the same problem. Drives me bats! :-/
I love the Brigertons
Then I wished you lived near California, Lois — the Los Angeles Chapter of RWA is having Julia Quinn do an all-day workshop for us in May — I’m very excited!
