This is the time of year when the late winter doldrums hit me. Spring is close–some days are so warm I can almost taste it! Then we’re hit with more freezing rain and the sweaters come back out. I want flip flops and sundresses, darn it! So, I went out today and bought some pale pink nail polish (OPI’s Let Them Eat Rice Cake), and got my hair cut even shorter. I was hoping for ‘chic Frenchwoman’ a la Audrey Tautou but I fear it turned out more as if Sweeney Todd took a job at my salon. At least hair grows back, right?
This is a good time to keep busy. My dance class this week covered the basics of tango, which I loved. Must find a way to put it in a book! And my Oscar party went off well. I served chocolate desserts and pomegranate martinis, so no one cared much when the broadcast went on absurdly long, and I didn’t feel too bad when I lost the Oscar pool. I totally missed Best Supporting Actor (who didn’t??) and Best Picture. But I did call Marie Antoinette for Best Costumes! Some of my favorite gowns–Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Penelope Cruz (though I would look like a demented tea cozy if I tried something like that!). Least favorite–Cameron Diaz, Kirsten Dunst, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep (I know she hadn’t a chance of winning, but did she have to wear whatever was on top of the laundry basket??), and Jennifer Hudson (though I did like the gold lace Cavalli she wore later, just hated that dull brown dress and weird Star Trek-ish bolero jacket). You can see all these and more at Go Fug Yourself!
To recap–Have you seen Amazing Grace? Read anything good lately? Want to hear more about 1780s France and 1520s England? Seen any nice spring nail polish colors? And what were your favorite Oscar looks?
Be sure and join us tomorrow, when the Riskies welcome Carla Kelly! Her book Mrs. Drew Plays Her Hand is one of the best Regencies ever (IMHO), so I’m very excited!
A new color of nail polish or even a new bottle of a same color lifts my spirits. LOL.
Well, 1780s is my obsession . . . my third book is veering into 1790 and it makes me sad. LOL!
I’m actually reading Beau Crusoe and was reading it even before Carla Kelly was put on our schedule!
This is a very hard time of year. Seasonal Affective Disorder is at its worst and it seems like Spring will never come. We do have six inch high Jonquils in our yard thanks to an absurdly warm then cold winter. Somehow they survived being under snow for several days.
And you already know I LOVED Helen Mirren’s gown. I thought she looked perfect.

Innocence & Impropriety by Diane Gaston in Bookstores now!
I just bought Beau Crusoe last week. Looking forward to the interview.
And curious to know if she still lives in ND. How come I never knew these authors who lived so close when I actually lived there?
I loved Amazing Grace. Idealized Wilberforce may be, and a tad historically inaccurate, but with Ioan Gruffyd in it, um, who cared?! 🙂 The story was a powerful one with carefully chosen details, and the acting fabulous and emotionally nuanced, with bursts of quick-witted humor. The audience sat quietly in their seats until the credits had stopped rolling. Yes! This is a not to be missed movie, but you can wait to see it on DVD. Now, 300, you’ve got to see it on the big screen, IMAX if your city shows it. 🙂
A new nail polish, or lipstick, is always a good pick-me-up! 🙂
Keira, I will definitely see AG, then. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a really good movie!
I guessed Alan Arkin would win! (I ended up really wishing I’d found an Oscar pool to bet in, as I also guessed one or two of the other upsets!)
And I guessed Marie for costumes too — how could it not win??? 🙂 (As we all know, they don’t give the award for *accurate* costumes!)
As for outfits worn to the Oscars — thought Rinko Kikuchi looked fab. And Jennifer Lopez (and hubby — yowza!) and Cate Blanchett.
I thought with their hair and makeup, Cameron Diaz and Maggie Gyllenhall looked a little too dead. Like, undead dead.

My guess re Meryl Streep is she wanted to look as different from her Devil Wears Prada character as possible.
As to winter blues, I am still trying to break even on my season pass to the local ski resort so I am not thinking about spring. Much. Except I recently saw this really cute pair of white wedges…
