I heard on the radio this morning that September 25 is National Museum Day! I had no idea there was such a thing, but I am all for it. I’ve loved wandering around museums, all sorts of museums, ever since I was a little kid, and it’s still one of my favorite things in the world. Museums are always so packed with intriguing objects, new information, interesting people, and quiet nooks.
Here are some of my favorites! (Just a few…would take too long to list all museums I love)

With the exception of the last one (which I haven’t been to – yet) you have picked all my favourites! I was blown away by the Frick when I first went there years ago, so much so that I began to think I must have dreamed it and was delighted to find that I hadn’t. I love the British Museum, and the Paris museums are excellent too.
I also love the Wallace Collection in London – an astonishing collection of paintings!
Can I count the British Library as a museum? I know it probably isn’t one technically, but it does preserve priceless old artefacts and makes them available to the public. I’ll never forget the thrill of reading manuscript notes which were written in a book over 200 years by the first owner.
Oh, there are so many! On an ongoing basis, my “home” museum, The Art Institute of Chicago. But the Metropolitan Museum of Art is so vast that I could go every day of my life and still make discoveries. Williamsburge, VA, is a living museum, that lets me walk around in another century. And then, there’s…Well, you see my problem. I LOVE museums!
Oh, me too! So many fabulous museums… I love the Frick in New York, too, and also the Frick in Pittsburgh! In London, the Wallace Collection, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, & the Museum of London…and the Huntington in California is amazing, too.
And I recently fell in love with the d’Orsay and the Louvre!
So many museums, so little time….
Ooh, I forgot another small French museum which is lovely – the Musée de Cluny. I just looked it up to check its spelling to find that it’s now officially known as Musée National du Moyen Âge (National Museum of the Middle Ages). It has the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries, six beautiful very old mille-fleurs tapestries which represent the senses.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The National Gallery of Art
I’m sure I would add the Art Institute of Chicago, but I was only there once and I didn’t get to see nearly enough. One thing I remember there–a string of Christmas bulbs hanging on one nail. I guess it is effective art if one remembers it for about ten years.
I’d probably also include the Louvre, if I ever get there!
Helena, I felt just the same about the Frick! Such a beautiful, magical place, every painting so perfect. And I love the Cluny too…spent an hour just staring at the unicorn tapestries the one time I got to go there 🙂
I’m with Helena, I also love the Wallace Collection. I also love the Sir John Soane Museum.
So now in addition to my To-Be-Read List, my Films-To-Be-Seen List, I must create a Museums-To-Be-Visited List.
Actually I have visited some of these–Musee d’Orsay is one of my favorites. But I must visit more!
